If you don't have a startup option other than your usual startup drive, you can still try to repair the drive by starting your Mac in single-user mode. This is a special startup environment that allows you to work with your Mac using commands that you type into a Terminal-like display. Because single-user mode doesn't require the startup drive to be completely functional, we can use some of the commands to perform drive repairs.
